Student Life: Fraternities and Sororities
Fraternities and Sororities
Fraternities and sororities have been a part of campus life at Saint Louis University since the early 1900’s. Membership has grown steadily and today over 1,200 men and women belong to 19 different chapters.

It has long been the goal of fraternities and sororities to help students make the most of their time in college. Membership can provide an all-encompassing experience, especially at Saint Louis University, including leadership and campus involvement opportunities, community service, educational programs focused on personal development and academic achievement, and a variety of social activities. The experience is full of opportunities and challenges that foster lifelong friendships.

In the classroom, fraternity and sorority members have a long track record of success. Statistics from the office of Institutional Studies show that students who join fraternities or sororities in their first semester are more likely to return for their second semester and second year than those who do not join. They also indicated that the graduation rate for students who join fraternities or sororities consistently surpassed the average rate. Furthermore, the group grade point average for the fraternity and sorority population, which was most recently a 3.24, has topped the 3.0 mark and surpassed the all-undergraduate student average for the past 21 semesters.

Outside the classroom, members are involved in just about every facet of campus life, from the largest to the smallest student organizations, from intramural and club sports to Campus Ministry programs such as the annual food drive and spring break service trips. According to a recent poll of members, over 64% are involved in at least one additional organization.

DeMattias Hall has been the hub of fraternity and sorority life since 1999, housing over 225 members in chapter room blocks. Most chapters have a designated meeting room in the hall, which they use for committee meetings and storage. The multipurpose room on the second floor of the hall is the site of numerous chapter meetings as well as various other programs, and the front patio and lawn make a great location for barbecues and just hanging out.
